Velobind systems from GBC are very popular with lawyers’ offices and universities. This is due in part to the compact bind that they offer. Velo bound documents use a binding strip with four, six, nine or eleven prongs, depending on the type of binding machine being utilized. The prongs are inserted through the punched paper where a back strip is placed behind the booklet. The strips are then attached to the back strip.
Hot-knife Velobind machines typically use 11-prong strips, which is considered to be the most sturdy type of Velobinding available. The prongs are available in different lengths, depending on the thickness of the book being bound. The excess prong is cut off and melted to the back strip. The end result looks great.
Cold knife and desktop Velobind systems do not use heat. Cold knife Velobind machines use 11-prong strips that are serrated, snapping into the back strip to bind the book. Desktop models typically use four-prong strips that fold over and snap into the back strip to complete the bind.
